January Goals Round up

Updated: Feb 5, 2022

How is it already February? I’m aware I say this all the time but here we are again, another month down.

January always seems to last for forever yet this time it also went by so fast, probably because I have a 3 and half year old and a 7 month old. Time just seems to vanish these days.

The quote, “the days are long but the year’s are short” has never been truer.

Anyway, little January roundup. I set myself some goals at the beginning of the month and this is a little recap and review of those. Over on Instagram I shared my personal goals as well but I’m going to focus on my writing ones over here as this is my writer’s page after all.

My goals were:

1.Read one script per week.

I wanted to do some research about scriptwriting, something I’ve never done before last December when I turned one of my books into a script. Learning how to layout, what to include, what not to include, the tone of the script etc can’t really be explained so the best way to do it, is by reading, reading and more reading.

I read the following scripts, which are all available online for free The Proposal, The Fault’s in Our Stars, Remember Me and Pretty Woman. I started with a rom-com, then narrowed it down to drama and romance as I established what the genre of the script I was writing was.

It was such a useful exercise and although I won’t continue to reading one a week, I will definitely keep reading them and learning through them.

2. Post on Instagram three times per week

I set up my writer’s Instagram back in late November and I wanted to make sure I prioritised it as part of my marketing journey for when I release some work. It’s actually proven to be a great tool for meeting other authors and sharing the journey with other likeminded people.

It’s also been an amazing motivator and inspiration for continuing on even when I’ve had a wobble in self-belief.

3.Write 20 pages of a new screenplay

In hindsight this was a silly goal BUT I wasn’t sure how much time I would have to dedicate to writing per week with two littlies, so I erred on the side of caution. Turns out I managed to write 90 odd pages and actually finished the first draft of the screenplay so this was an epic win for me. It also means I have a more realistic idea of how much writing I can do and scope out how much extra time I have.

What were your January goals and how did you get on with them?
