Five Films to watch this Valentine’s Day (Netflix Edition)

Any day that celebrates love is a winner for me. I don’t need an excuse to be love's biggest advocate but if you are going to give me a whole day dedicated to just that, then you bet I’m going to make the most of it.

Whether you are single, forever the love optimist or want to make sure your evening is full of cupid’s special magic then here are five films currently on Netflix that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Duff

Blurb: “When a smart teenager discovers her classmates degrading label for her, she enlists help from the school’s football star for a massive makeover.”

It’s funny, cringey, some corker one liners and Robbie Amell. Even though he clearly does not belong in High School, he is a welcome addition to this great movie. I love the whole “the conventionally unattractive girl gets to guy” even if the movie clearly wants us to know it’s not just about that. It’s light hearted and an easy watch, perfect for a Valentine Date night because it’s not too soppy either.

Chalet Girl

Blurb: “Ex-skateboarder Kim Matthews is transplanted to the world of alpine sports, an environment she finds foreign, until she tries snowboarding”

The blurb doesn’t do it justice. I love the chemistry between Felicity Jones and Ed Westwick and the fact that this is a British movie. The setting is perfect for those not ready to give up on winter and the idea of snow, and it’s got the romance but also extreme sports which for me is a great coupling (like Karen Swan’s new novel Midnight in the Snow). It’s a big tick from my ski loving heart. It’s also funny and light hearted so again another easy watch.

Me Before You

Blurb: “Vivacious, unassuming Lou faces pointed questions of the heart when she takes a job caring for a wealthy, cynical bachelor paralysed in an accident”

Based off a Jojo Moyes book, I’d bring the tissues for this one. I’ve watched it so many times and the ending still gets me (no spoilers please! Although I’m sure everyone has probably seen this). Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin are fab in it. It’s full of sweet moments and hardship, a definite tear jerker.

The Kissing Booth (all of them!)

Blurb: “When teenager Elle’s first kiss leads to a forbidden romance with the hottest boy in high school, she risks her relationship with her best friend”

Boy did Beth Reekles do well on this one. I happened across it late one night after my first baby was born and I’ve watched it, potentially, a hundred times more since. It’s funny, sunny and delightful. Elle and Noah’s relationship unfolds through all three movies (would recommend all of them, though if you ask me Marco was ROBBED…anyway…). It’s a bit of cheese and exactly what you would expect from a teenage rom-com. It’s just…perfection.

Safe Haven

Blurb: “When a mysterious woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, she begins a new life but remains haunted by a terrifying secret”

More of a drama romance, the content is pretty heavy and again, you might need the tissues BUT it’s still a winner. Love after loss. Love after trauma. The hope and the twist… a beautiful love story born from life challenges.

That’s your lot, five films to watch this Valentine’s that are on Netflix. Whether you are looking for pure cheese, the heartache or the funny, there are plenty to choose from.

I’d love to hear in the comments below some of your favourites.
